About this Speaker

Lorenzo Cohen, PhD, is the Richard E. Haynes Distinguished Professor in Clinical Cancer Prevention and Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is also Distinguished Clinical Professor, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, Shanghai, China. Dr. Cohen is a founding member and past president of the Society for Integrative Oncology and the former Vice-Chair of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health. Dr. Cohen is passionate about educating others on how to prevent cancer and maintain optimal health across the lifespan. As the majority of cancers are preventable, Dr. Cohen is conducting research to demonstrate that lifestyle factors including healthy diet, physical activity, stress management, and social support – in other words, leading a yogic lifestyle – can influence cancer outcomes. Dr. Cohen also conducts research examining integrative medicine practices such as meditation, yoga (in collaboration with VYASA), acupuncture, and other strategies aimed at reducing the negative aspects of cancer treatment and improving quality of life. Dr. Cohen leads a team conducting NIH-funded research and delivering clinical care of integrative medicine practices such as meditation, Tibetan yoga, Patanjali-based yoga, Tai chi/Qigong, massage, diet, exercise, acupuncture and other strategies such as stress management, music therapy, emotional writing and more aimed at reducing the negative aspects of cancer treatment and improving quality of life and clinical outcomes. Dr. Cohen has conducted some of the first randomized clinical trials of yoga in cancer patients and continues this important research today examining the psycho-spiritual and biological benefits of yoga. Being influenced by his grandmother, legendary yogini Vanda Scaravelli, he also has his own yoga practice and recently obtained his RTY 200. Dr. Cohen has published more than 175 scientific articles in top medical journals, has published numerous book chapters, edited two books on integrative medicine for cancer care, and co-edited the book entitled The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care. Dr. Cohen, along with his wife Alison Jefferies, published a new book entitled Anticancer Living: The Six Step Solution to Transform Your Health (Penguin Random House). Anticancer Living provides an accessible, prescriptive guide to wellness based on the latest scientific findings and clinical trials, and it showcases the community of doctors, researchers, caregivers, and patients who have been inspired to create change. Dr. Cohen is internationally known as a thought-leader in the field of integrative medicine and especially integrative oncology. He is a sought after speaker and gives an average of 50 talks a year at public events, international scientific meetings, and academic institutions.
